Welcome to Your Weekly News Brief!
Happy Bloomin’ Friday — and what a week for celebrating innovation!
The 2026 TAGIE Award Finalists have been announced — and voting is officially OPEN! Congratulations to all this year’s extraordinary finalists! These are the inventors, designers, suppliers, retailers, marketers and PR teams whose innovation keeps our industry evolving.
I’m thrilled to share that Ashley Eckstein — actress, entrepreneur, founder of Her Universe and the voice and originator of Ahsoka Tano — is hosting the TAGIEs! This year’s TAGIEs are going to be especially fun! We’re kicking off the 50th Anniversary of Star Wars Celebration with our theme, “The Force of Play." A heartfelt thank you to Disney, our TAGIE Awards Presenting Sponsor, for making this very special celebration possible!
Please vote for your favorite innovators! Voting is open through October 21, and we’ll celebrate the winners November 6 at Joe’s Live during POP Week.
Speaking of innovation, longtime toy inventor and Bop It creator Dan Klitsner has a thought-provoking article in Newsweek, “In the Age of AI, Questions Matter More Than Answers.” Dan makes the case that as AI makes answers increasingly easy to find, our human advantage may lie in curiosity, judgment and knowing which questions are worth asking.
Dan also shares his Top Ten Reasons to Attend our POP Inventor Pitch & Innovation Conference. Whether you’re a Pro Inventor, New Inventor or a Company looking for innovative ideas, there is so much packed into these three days — incredible speakers, pitching, mentoring, networking, plus the TAGIEs and CHITAG Fair are all included! Check out Dan’s Top Ten and join us November 5–7!
Here’s another reason to celebrate the Inventor Conference: this week we share the story of two inventors who attended our 2024 Conference and their journey “From Tapped Four to Tap4” — and into Walmart!
Speaking of inventor journeys, we share Robert Fuhrer’s KenKen journey. Bob has an amazing eye for discovering ideas — and who doesn't love hearing the story behind the story?
There is lots more to discover in this week’s Bloom Report — enjoy!

From Tapped Four to TAP4!
Hi Dorene and Marilyn! While I have not seen you since POP Week 2024, I saw your game TAP4 in Walmart! Please share your journey with our readers!
It all started with a game of Bunco!
We met at a friend's house while playing Bunco with a group of friends. Everyone kept telling us that we needed to get to know each other because we were so much alike and maybe a little crazy, too!
They were right! We became great friends, and little did we know that our friendship would eventually turn into a card game that would be played by families around the world.
Dan Klitsner: Top 10 reasons I never miss POP Week
Although I go to all the other toy fairs and many companies host their own pitch events, I’ve sold multiple concepts at POP over the years thanks to its superior setup. It’s the toy inventor community's best-kept secret, but I guess my guilt got the better of me—time to finally spill the beans...
The Top 10
Robert Fuhrer: The KenKen Puzzle Journey
I first came across KenKen in Japan in 2007. I certainly didn’t look at it and immediately think, “This is going to be huge.” In fact, my first reaction was that it seemed pretty difficult. But I was intrigued enough to pursue it, and then something remarkable started to happen.
The Times in the UK picked it up, followed by Reader’s Digest, and then The New York Times. Will Shortz, the longtime crossword editor of The New York Times and one of the most influential figures in the puzzle world, became a strong supporter of KenKen and helped establish it as a serious daily puzzle. Each of those milestones gave us more confidence that there really was something special here.
I’ve now been championing KenKen for nearly 20 years, and one of the most gratifying things has been watching it evolve from a newspaper puzzle into something much broader. Because KenKen was created by Japanese math teacher Tetsuya Miyamoto, education has always been part of its DNA. Today, KenKen is enjoyed by people of virtually every age and ability and is used by tens of thousands of teachers to build arithmetic fluency, logic and problem-solving skills. READ MORE
The Toy Association & UIA’s Toy Hub Bring Toy & Game Inventors Together in LA
A successful networking event during LA Fall Preview gave toy and game inventors and industry veterans a chance to connect, talk shop, and build relationships — all without the pressure of pitching.
One of the livelier gatherings during this year’s LA Fall Preview wasn’t a retailer meeting or product presentation. It was a room full of toy and game inventors and industry professionals simply getting to know one another.
On September 16, The Toy Association, in partnership with the United Inventors Association’s (UIA) Toy Hub, hosted their first inventor-focused gathering in Los Angeles at an Inventor Networking Hour at The Toy Building in El Segundo. The event, sponsored by Eastar Toy & Game Manufacturing, brought independent toy and game inventors together with manufacturers, inventor relations executives, product developers, and other industry professionals.
And there was one important distinction: This wasn’t a pitch event. READ MORE
